Starting to wonder...
So - I’m beginning to give up on The Apprentice. That’s a horrible thing to have to admit after all this time, these long years of watching and gawping at a series of hopefuls as they spend twelve weeks trying to get a job with or become the business partner of the guy who gave us, yes, Amstrad. And once, if I remember rightly, owned Tottenham Hotspur. I used to thoroughly enjoy watching the show every week, checking out a series of slightly pointless, vaguely business related "tasks", then crowing as these rather puny individuals fail, only to be taken into the boardroom and chewed out by Sir Alan, sorry, Lord Sugar. But recently, something’s changed.
I think what it is is that I’ve finally realised that all we’re doing is laughing at our own slightly pointless foibles. A lot of the time the people on the show come across as being self-important idiots who make Gordon Gecko look kind of relaxed and fun. But essentially all they’re doing is what most people would probably do in the same situation, trying to please the boss, sucking up to him in public then bitching about each other in private. Undermining task leaders in order to watch that person fail. It’s like watching someone make an asbestos claim when their house was only built 20 years ago. But I’ve seen it happen where I work. In fact it’s perfectly normal practice in many offices. So it’s horribly ironic to see people trying to pretend it’s not like us...
